There are several confidence definitions. Every author has a different way to explain what they think confidence is. You can adopt any of the definitions you understand better. In this article, I will give you as many confident definitions as I can.


What is confidence?

 According to Merriam Webster, confidence is a feeling or consciousness of one’s powers or of reliance on one’s circumstances. She states that it is a faith or belief that one will act in a right, proper or effective way. In other words, it is a relation of trust or intimacy.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, confidence is the quality of being certain of your abilities or having trust in people, plans or the future. For example, “He has the confidence to walk into a room of strangers and immediately start a conversation.”


Collins defines confidence as someone who feels sure about their abilities, qualities or ideas. Synonyms that can be used include self-assurance, courage, assurance, aplomb etc.

Your dictionary defines confidence as firm belief, trust and reliance. That is trust or faith in a person or thing. It is believing in one’s own abilities and having self-confidence.

The Macmillan dictionary defines confidence as the belief that you are able to do things well. For example, “He is a nice boy, but he doesn’t have much confidence.”
